Face ID & Touch ID After Repair
Face ID or Touch ID stopped working after a screen or battery repair? Here’s exactly why it happens, when it can be fixed, and what to ask before agreeing to any repair.
Why Face ID stops working after a screen repair
The Face ID module is cryptographically paired to the original iPhone motherboard. This pairing is hardcoded at the factory and cannot be transferred or reset by any third-party tool. If the Face ID flex cable is damaged during a screen swap, or if a replacement screen comes with a different module, Face ID will permanently fail.
🔴 This is Apple’s security design — not a repair shop error. Even Apple’s own service centres cannot pair a new Face ID module to an existing board without Apple’s proprietary software. Any shop claiming they can “fully restore Face ID” by swapping the module on iPhone 12 or later is not being truthful.
Face ID — when it can be fixed vs when it can’t
| Situation | Can it be fixed? |
|---|---|
| Face ID flex cable disconnected during screen swap — reconnected correctly | ✅ Yes — Face ID should work normally |
| Face ID flex cable torn or damaged during repair | ⚠️ Partial — board-level repair sometimes possible |
| Replacement screen installed without transferring original Face ID module | ❌ No — original module must be transferred |
| New module fitted to replace broken one on iPhone 12 or later | ❌ No — cryptographic pairing prevents this |
⚠️ Before any screen repair — ask your technician: “Will you transfer my original Face ID module to the new screen?” A reputable shop will always do this as standard.
Touch ID repair impact by repair type
| Repair type | Face ID affected? | Touch ID affected? |
|---|---|---|
| Screen replacement | ⚠️ Only if module not transferred | ✅ No — Home button not touched |
| Battery replacement | ✅ No | ✅ No |
| Home button replacement | ✅ No | ❌ Yes — pairing lost permanently |
| Charging port replacement | ✅ No | ✅ No |

People Also Ask
Will Face ID work after a screen replacement?
Yes — if the repair shop correctly transfers your original Face ID module to the new screen. Ask before agreeing: “Do you transfer the Face ID module?”
Can Face ID be restored if it stopped working after repair?
It depends on why it stopped. If the connector was displaced, reconnecting it restores Face ID. If the module was not transferred to an iPhone 12 or later, Face ID cannot be restored by any third-party.
Does battery replacement affect Face ID or Touch ID?
No. Battery replacement does not involve the screen or Home button — Face ID and Touch ID are completely unaffected.
