PHONE REPAIR GLOSSARY / SCREEN & DISPLAY / NO DISPLAY
Phone No Display / Black Screen
Phone powers on (you can hear sounds or feel vibrations) but the screen stays black — or the phone won’t turn on at all. These are two different problems with different causes. Here’s how to tell them apart and what repair each needs.
First: Is the phone on or completely dead?
| Symptom | What it means |
|---|---|
| Screen black but phone vibrates, makes sounds, or shows charging indicator | Phone is ON — screen or display connection fault |
| No vibration, no sound, no response to charger at all | Phone is OFF — battery, board, or power fault |
| Phone charges but won’t turn on | Software crash or power IC fault |
| Screen flickering then going black | Display connector loose or screen panel failing |
The 5 most common causes
1. Screen connector loose or disconnected
After a drop, the ribbon cable connecting the screen to the motherboard can come loose. The phone works perfectly but the display shows nothing. This is one of the cheapest fixes: a technician reseats the connector.
How to identify: Phone vibrates or makes sounds but screen is completely black. Happened after a drop. Try pressing gently around the screen edges — if the display briefly flickers on, the connector is likely loose.
2. Screen panel failed
The OLED or LCD panel itself has failed — from a drop, water damage, or age. Requires a full screen assembly replacement.
How to identify: Phone is clearly on (sounds, notifications, vibration). No flickering response. Screen is evenly dark. Happened after a drop.
3. Dead battery
A completely dead battery — especially one deeply discharged for a long time — won’t respond immediately to a charger. Leave it on charge for 15–30 minutes before assuming a fault.
How to identify: Phone was left discharged for days or weeks. No response to charger. Try a different cable and charger first.
4. Power management IC (PMIC) fault
The power management chip on the motherboard controls all voltage regulation. If it fails, the phone won’t turn on regardless of battery charge. Common after water damage or electrical surge. Requires board-level repair.
How to identify: Phone completely unresponsive. No charging indicator. Battery is known to be charged. No prior drop — but possibly water exposure.
5. Software crash / stuck in boot loop
After a failed update, the phone can become stuck before the display initialises — appearing dead when it’s actually cycling through failed boot attempts.
How to identify: Happened immediately after a software update. Try a force restart.
Force restart — try this first
Samsung Galaxy: Hold Power + Volume Down for 10–15 seconds
Most Android: Hold Power for 10–15 seconds

People Also Ask
My phone screen is black but it’s still on — what’s wrong?
If the phone is clearly on (vibration, sounds, notifications) but the screen shows nothing, the fault is in the display — either a loose connector after a drop or a failed screen panel. Bring it in for a free assessment to confirm which.
My phone won’t turn on at all — is it dead?
Not necessarily. Try a force restart first. Then try a different charging cable. Leave it on charge for 20 minutes. If it still shows nothing, the fault could be a deeply discharged battery, a PMIC fault, or water damage — all diagnosable in-store.
How much does no display repair cost in Singapore?
It depends on the cause. A loose screen connector reseating is minimal. A full screen replacement ranges from $68–$250+ depending on model. Get a free diagnosis first.
