What is a Screen Digitiser? Touch Screen Repair Explained Singapore | Certified Phone Repair SG

PHONE REPAIR GLOSSARY / SCREEN & DISPLAY / DIGITISER

Digitiser

The touch-sensitive layer of a phone screen that detects finger input. Screen shows fine but touch doesn’t work? That’s a digitiser fault. On all modern smartphones, it’s fused to the display and replaced as one assembly.

What It Is

The digitiser is the transparent touch-sensing layer that sits above the display panel. It detects capacitive input from your fingers and translates it into screen coordinates. On modern smartphones, the digitiser is laminated directly to the OLED or LCD display panel — meaning that when either layer is damaged, the entire fused assembly needs to be replaced together.

Signs of a Digitiser Fault

  • Touch unresponsive in certain areas — parts of the screen don’t register taps or swipes
  • Screen responds but touch is inaccurate — taps register in the wrong position
  • Ghost touches — screen registers input with no finger present
  • Touch stops working entirely — display shows image correctly but no input detected
  • Intermittent touch after a drop — the digitiser connection to the board may be loose

People Also Ask

What is the difference between a digitiser and a display?

The display produces the image. The digitiser detects touch. On most modern smartphones they are fused together and replaced as one unit.

My screen displays fine but touch doesn’t work — what’s wrong?

This is a digitiser fault. The display is intact but the touch layer has failed — usually caused by a drop. A technician can diagnose whether it’s the digitiser or a loose connector.

Can a digitiser be repaired separately from the screen?

On older phones, sometimes yes. On all modern smartphones (iPhone 8 and later, Samsung S-series and recent A-series), the digitiser and display are fused and must be replaced together.
