PC Glossary — Terms Explained in Plain English
Shopping for a gaming or office PC and drowning in acronyms? Here’s what each term actually means for you — no jargon, with links to real builds in our PC Builds shop so you can see each spec in action. Each term also has its own in-depth page.
GPU (Graphics Card)
The chip that draws everything on screen. For gaming it’s the single most important part — it decides your frame rate and resolution. For office work it barely matters unless you do design or video. Examples: the RTX 3060 (1080p class) in our Budget Build, the RTX 3070 (1440p class) in the Lian Li Build, and the RTX 3080 (4K class) in the 4K Build. Read the full GPU guide →
CPU (Processor)
The brain of the PC. Core count and speed decide how fast it multitasks. For gaming, a 6-core chip like the Ryzen 5 5600X is the sweet spot — it won’t hold back a 1440p GPU. For office use, the same chip breezes through spreadsheets and video calls. A “G” chip (like the 5600G in our Wood Panel Build) has built-in graphics, so an office PC can skip the graphics card entirely. Read the full CPU guide →
RAM (Memory)
Short-term workspace for open apps and games. 16GB is the sweet spot for both gaming and office multitasking; 32GB if you edit video, run local AI, or keep 50 browser tabs open. DDR4 3200–3600MHz is the standard in every build we sell. Ryzen CPUs run measurably faster with 3600MHz RAM, which is why builds like our Lian Li RTX 3060 use XPG 3600MHz kits. SSD vs NVMe vs HDD (Storage)
Where your files live. HDD = old spinning disk, slow. SSD = flash storage, fast. NVMe SSD = flash storage plugged straight into the motherboard, fastest — Windows boots in seconds and games load near-instantly. Every build in our shop uses a 512GB NVMe or SSD as the main drive; bigger drives can be added on request via WhatsApp. Read the full storage guide →
PSU & 80+ Ratings (Power Supply)
Converts wall power for your parts. The “80+ Bronze / Gold / Platinum” badge means efficiency and, in practice, build quality. A quality PSU protects everything else — cheap ones kill PCs. Higher-power GPUs need more wattage: 650W suits an RTX 3070, while the 3070 Ti’s higher draw is why the Lian Li Zotac build runs a Super Flower 750W Gold+. Read the full PSU guide →
1080p / 1440p / 4K (Resolution)
How many pixels your monitor shows. 1080p (Full HD) is the esports standard and cheapest to run. 1440p (2K) is the sharpness/performance sweet spot for most gamers in 2026. 4K is gorgeous but needs an RTX 3080-class card. Match the build to your monitor: 1080p build, 1440p build, 4K build. Read the full resolution guide →
Refresh Rate (Hz) & FPS
Hz = how many times per second your monitor updates; FPS = how many frames your PC produces. A 144Hz or 165Hz monitor feels dramatically smoother — but only if the PC pushes matching FPS. For office work, 60–75Hz is perfectly fine. Read the full refresh rate guide →
DLSS / FSR (Upscaling)
Free performance. The GPU renders at a lower resolution and AI upscales it to look sharp — often 30–50% more FPS. DLSS is NVIDIA’s version (RTX cards), FSR is AMD’s. It’s a big reason an RTX 3060 still handles modern titles comfortably. Read the full DLSS & FSR guide →
ARGB & Tempered Glass (Aesthetics)
ARGB = individually addressable RGB lighting you can recolour with software. TG = tempered glass side panel to show it off. Zero effect on performance — pure style. See it in full effect on the Lian Li RGB build. Office buyers: skip it and save. Read the full ARGB guide →
Form Factors — ATX / mATX / Mini-ITX
Simply the size of the motherboard and case. ATX = full size, most room to upgrade. mATX = compact middle ground. Mini-ITX = tiny, great for small desks — like our Ultra Portable build with a carry handle, or the Compact Mini cube. Read the full form factor guide →
Refurbished GPU & Mining Cards
Refurbished = previously used, then tested and serviced. Done right, it’s the best value in PC building — that’s how our builds cost hundreds less than retail. The risk is ex-mining cards run 24/7 until worn out, which is why every GPU we sell is stress tested in 3DMark + FurMark, has its VRAM verified, and mining-worn cards are rejected. Warranty included on every build. Read the full refurbished GPU guide →
Integrated vs Dedicated Graphics
Integrated = graphics built into the CPU (enough for office work, video calls, light games). Dedicated = a separate graphics card (needed for real gaming, design, and video editing). Office buyers can save $300+ by choosing integrated — WhatsApp us for an office spec from $450. Read the full integrated vs dedicated guide →
