Many of the laptops we see from Bukit Batok are home and gaming machines with the same complaint: hot, loud, and slower than they used to be.
Laptop running hot, loud or slow?
A laptop that’s fast for the first few minutes and then slows down is usually protecting itself from heat. Singapore’s room temperatures leave laptops less headroom than they were designed for, and a few years of dust makes it worse. There are three usual causes.
Dust in the fan and heatsink
Dust blocks the airflow, so the fan spins harder and louder to keep up. A professional internal clean is usually the cheapest fix.
Dried thermal paste
On laptops three years or older, the paste between the processor and the heatsink dries out. Replacing it typically lowers temperatures by 15 to 25°C.
A fan that rattles or has stopped
A failing fan needs replacing before the heat starts to affect other parts, including the battery and the display.
We do thermal cleaning and thermal paste replacement the same day. Our thermal throttling guide shows how to check your temperatures with free tools before you come in.
Simple habits that keep a laptop cooler
- Use it on a hard, flat surface. Beds and sofas block the vents.
- Keep the vents clear of dust and anything pushed up against them.
- In a room without air-conditioning, a cooling pad or better ventilation helps.
If it still runs hot after that, the problem is inside, and it’s worth having it checked before the heat shortens the life of the battery.
