GPU VRAM
The dedicated memory on a graphics card. More VRAM lets the GPU handle higher resolutions and more complex textures without stuttering. 8GB is the current practical minimum for 1440p gaming; 12GB is recommended for 4K.
What It Is
VRAM (Video RAM) is memory built directly onto the graphics card — separate from your PC’s system RAM. It stores textures, frame buffers, and game assets the GPU needs instant access to.
Running out of VRAM causes stuttering, texture pop-in, and frame drops — even on a powerful GPU. The resolution you game at is the biggest factor in how much VRAM you need.
VRAM by Resolution
| Resolution | Minimum VRAM | Recommended |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p | 6GB | 8GB |
| 1440p | 8GB | 10–12GB |
| 4K | 10GB | 12GB+ |

People Also Ask
Does more VRAM make games run faster?
Not directly — VRAM is a ceiling, not an accelerator. When you have enough, more doesn’t help. When you don’t have enough, performance drops sharply with stuttering and texture issues.
Is 8GB VRAM still enough in 2025?
For 1080p and most 1440p gaming, yes. For 4K or very demanding games at 1440p with high texture settings, 12GB is the safer choice.
Why does the RTX 3060 have more VRAM than the RTX 3070?
NVIDIA made an unusual decision with the 30-series — the 3060 uses a 192-bit memory bus with 12GB, while the 3070 uses a faster 256-bit bus with 8GB. The 3070 is faster overall, but the 3060 has more raw VRAM. For most gaming workloads, the 3070 is the better card.
