What is a Swollen Phone Battery? Signs & What to Do Singapore | Certified Phone Repair SG

PHONE REPAIR GLOSSARY / BATTERY & POWER / SWOLLEN BATTERY

Swollen Battery

A degraded lithium battery that produces gas and physically expands inside the phone. This is a safety issue — stop using the device immediately and bring it to a repair shop. Do not attempt to remove it yourself.

⚠️ Safety warning: A swollen lithium battery is a fire and chemical hazard. If you notice any of the signs below, stop using the phone immediately. Do not put it in a bag or pocket. Do not puncture or compress the battery. Bring it to a repair shop the same day.

What It Is

Lithium polymer batteries contain an electrolyte that, as the battery ages and degrades, begins to break down and produce gas. This gas physically expands the battery, pushing outward against the back cover or screen. Swelling is more common in older batteries (3+ years) and in phones exposed to consistent heat. Singapore’s ambient temperature of 28–33°C makes swelling more common here than in cooler climates.

How to Spot a Swollen Battery

  • Back cover lifting, bowing outward, or separating at the edges
  • Screen lifting off the frame on one side
  • Phone feels thicker than it used to
  • Phone has a subtle curve when laid flat on a table
  • Unusual warmth even when idle
  • Battery percentage jumping erratically or phone shutting off unexpectedly

People Also Ask

Is a swollen phone battery dangerous?

Yes. A swollen lithium battery can rupture, catch fire, or release toxic fumes if punctured or compressed. Stop using the phone, keep it in a cool open area, and bring it to a repair shop immediately.

Can I remove a swollen battery myself?

No. Swollen batteries must not be punctured or compressed. A technician can safely remove it — attempting removal without experience risks puncturing the battery and causing a fire.

What causes phone batteries to swell?

Overcharging, sustained heat exposure, physical damage, age, and manufacturing defects all cause the electrolyte to break down and produce gas. Singapore’s ambient temperature gives batteries much less thermal margin than in cooler countries.
