Why laptop batteries degrade
Laptop batteries follow the same degradation pattern as phone batteries — each charge cycle reduces maximum capacity slightly. In Singapore’s heat, this degrades faster — heat is the primary enemy of lithium battery chemistry, and laptops used in non-air-conditioned rooms or on soft surfaces that block vents run hot and age batteries faster.
- Windows: Open Command Prompt as administrator → type
powercfg /batteryreport→ press Enter → open the generated HTML report. Look for “Design Capacity” vs “Full Charge Capacity” — the ratio is your battery health percentage - MacBook: Hold Option → click the Apple menu → System Information → Power → look for “Cycle Count” and “Condition”. Condition: Normal = fine, Service Recommended = replace soon, Service Battery = replace now
Signs your laptop battery needs replacing
- Laptop dies within 1–2 hours even after a full charge when it used to last 6–8 hours
- Laptop only works when plugged in — battery holds no charge
- Battery percentage drops suddenly — jumps from 40% to 5% without warning
- Windows shows “Consider replacing your battery” notification
- MacBook shows “Service Battery” in the menu bar battery indicator
- Laptop bottom panel bulging or trackpad being pushed up — swollen battery. Replace immediately. This is a fire risk.
🔴 Swollen laptop battery: If your laptop lid or keyboard is being pushed up from underneath, stop using it immediately. Do not charge it. A swollen lithium battery is a fire hazard. Bring it in for emergency replacement.
OEM vs third-party battery
At Certified Phone Repair we use OEM-equivalent batteries with the correct voltage, capacity, and connector for your specific laptop model. Always ask for the capacity in mAh or Wh when comparing quotes — it’s the only way to compare battery quality directly.
