MacBook Chip Types — Intel vs M1 vs M2 vs M3
Your MacBook’s chip determines what repairs are possible, whether RAM or storage can be upgraded, and how the machine performs. Intel and Apple Silicon MacBooks are fundamentally different — here’s what you need to know before bringing yours in for repair in Singapore.
How to check which chip your MacBook has
Under Chip or Processor you will see either:
- Intel Core i5 / i7 / i9 — Intel MacBook (pre-2020)
- Apple M1 / M2 / M3 (or Pro/Max/Ultra variants) — Apple Silicon MacBook
Intel vs Apple Silicon — key differences
- Intel Core i3/i5/i7/i9 processor
- Separate CPU, RAM, and storage chips
- Some models allow RAM or SSD upgrade
- Fan cooling (gets hot under load)
- Made 2010–2020
- Apple M1, M2, M3 (or Pro/Max/Ultra)
- CPU, GPU, RAM integrated on one chip
- RAM and storage cannot be upgraded
- Fanless (M1/M2 Air) or quiet fan
- Made 2020–present
Apple Silicon RAM and storage are not upgradeable. On all M1, M2, and M3 MacBooks, memory and storage are integrated directly onto the chip. Buy the right spec at purchase — a repair shop cannot add RAM to an M-series MacBook.
